Ghatophryne ornata - Ornate Stream Toad



This endemic species is very rare. It inhabits inland wetlands and tropical evergreen forests of southern Western Ghats of India, (especially in Brahmagiri Hills, Coorg, and Kudremukh National Park of Karnataka as well as Silent Valley National Park and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary in Kerala) at an altitude of 1,000m asl.

Conservation Status:

This species is listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species (https://www.iucnredlist.org/).


According to the IUCN Red List assessment, the population of this species is declining. Its current population size is unknown. Its extent of occurrence is less than 5,000 sq km and all the mature individuals are fewer in the five locations. The main threat to its persistence occurs from habitat degradation due to deforestation for coffee cultivation.
